I’m used to handling things on my own. Am I weak or broken?
Not at all. Everyone may need help now and then. We have strengths and limitations. This problem may feel overwhelming, making it difficult to access your strengths. Together was may identify what may need to be addressed to help you feel better.
Any difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
A mental health professional is more objective. Therapy may offer different perspectives, insights, and skills that stem from listening without judgment and inquiring without expectations. Therapy is confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” If you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that it may be too much over time for you or for them.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Medication alone cannot solve all issues, though sometimes may help in conjunction with therapy. I am trained in psychopharmacology and can answer your questions about meds. Our work is to explore the root of the issue – physical, behaviorally, emotionally and socially. This may help you reach personal and/or relational goals.
How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?
Each person has different issues and goals for therapy, which will be different depending on the individual. We will customize our approach to meet your needs.
How long will it take?
This is not possible to say in a general FAQs page. Each circumstance is unique and length of time in therapy is variable to achieve maximum benefit. This may depend on your desire for personal development, commitment, and why you to seek therapy.
I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
Active participation and dedication is crucial to your success. We see each other with limited frequency and duration. The work you do outside of our sessions will really help you see your personal growth and development.
My partner and I are having problems. Should we be in individual counseling or come together?
If you are concerned about your relationship, one member of the couple may work with me. I can help make a referral to a couples therapist.
